Over at Shawneesansoo on YouTube, Big Dave has posted some comments about the Tomahawk and Knife. That several hundred year old combination makes for a great home defense tandem. A good combination to keep at your bedside or in your vehicle, as a backup to, or in place of, a firearm.

Tomahawks were carried in Vietnam by numerous troops (not officially issued, but carried because of the nature of the tool for it's utilitarian use as well as a close quarters combat weapon. And many are carried by troops in Iraq and Afghanistan today.

One of my Marine buddy's fellow Marine, was in Afghanistan. The context was that the enemy was in close proximity and the Marine did not have access to his rifle. Fortunately, the enemy's rifle malfunctioned and did not fire.

The quick thinking Marine threw his tomahawk, striking the target in the head.

But only the handle hit him in his head.

However, the force of the impact slightly dazed him, and the Marine closed in quickly with his knife and gave the guy a quick one way ticket to the 72 virgins in the Moslem brothel in the sky.

Outstanding!

Generally speaking, you do not want to let go of your weapon. But this is one of those exceptions to the general rule.

Hawk and Knife: the combo is very practical.

Here is an article from ABC News about the resurgence of the tomahawk among some of America's finest warriors.

Dave (the Shawnee in Shawnee San Soo) was/is ahead of his time, or behind it, or whatever, depending on your time warp perspective, in his advocacy of this classic American iteration of the axe, called a Tomahawk.

Bottom line... the Hawk is a great close quarters combat weapon... that can double as a tool.

What I would be interested in seeing would be a video clip (perhaps on YouTube)... showing Mr. Dave Teague incorporating the Tomahawk (in dominate hand) and the Bowie Knife (using reverse grip or "Eastern" grip) into a Kung-Fu San Soo hand form.

I think the asymmetrical dynamics added to the hand form (as opposed to two short sticks, or two knives, or two sabres, or two butterfly swords, etc.; which would encompass a more symmetrical pattern) would be an exciting element to weapons form training. (Of course, in my very low brow, uneducated, Village Idiot of San Soo, opinion.) Rolling Eyes

They make practice (safety) Tomahawks too. It would be interesting to see Mr. Dave Teague, later on down the road, show more fighting applications with a safety Tomahawk and a safety (rubber) knife with a training partner.
